For me, naming a painting is one of the most rewarding parts of the creative process. I love playing with descriptive words or clever turns of phrase, searching for something that feels as though it was meant to belong. It’s not always a quick process, but when I come across the one, it’s like a missing piece falling into place. When I discovered the beautiful Welsh word Hiraeth, I knew instantly it was the perfect match.

Hiraeth is one of those words that slips through the cracks of literal translation, instead weaving itself into feelings. In Welsh, it captures a deep longing or homesickness—a yearning for a place, time, or even a version of yourself that may no longer exist. It’s nostalgia laced with melancholy, a sense of belonging tinged with the bittersweet knowledge that it’s just out of reach.

My new painting, Hiraeth, embodies this elusive emotion. Fragments of memories, the hint of a home once cherished, or the shimmer on land kissed by fading light.

The beauty of Hiraeth lies in its universality. While the word is uniquely Welsh, the feeling is something we’ve all known at some point. The painting doesn’t dictate a narrative; instead, it invites you to project your own.
